NMPW x TCU Internship in Applied History
Are you interested in exploring career options in history beyond the classroom? Do you want an immersive, hands-on experience in a museum setting? Then consider enrolling in Texas Christian University's new program in Applied History!
Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 9 hours of credit toward a History major or minor in this program that provides necessary context in the history of war and society and requisite skills in the discipline of history.
- Fall 2023: Choose 3 credit hours from the following:
- HIST 30663 War and Society
- HIST 40643 Civil War & Reconstruction
- HIST 40673 US 1941 to 1975
- Spring 2024: Choose 3 credit hours from the following:
- HIST 30663 War and Society: War in the Pacific
- HIST 20003 Historian’s Craft
The following internship provides in-depth, on-the-job experience that will apply your knowledge to the field of Public History through exploring museum education, archives, and collections.
- Summer 2024: Applied Work at the National Museum of the Pacific War
- HIST 30073 Internship in Public History
The National Museum of the Pacific War provides hands-on opportunities for students interested in the museum field. As an intern, you will:
- Gain valuable hands-on experience in three key areas of museum studies and public history by working three weeks in museum education, archives, and collections
- Hone your historical research and writing skills
- Have the opportunity to attend workshops that offer career insights and behind-the-scenes access
2024 Summer Schedule:
- May 27th-August 3rd
- 10 weeks long
- 40 hours a week
- Some nights and weekends
Internship in Applied History (Rotations in education, archives, and collections):
- Week 1: Orientation, museum exploration, and portfolio-building workshop
- Weeks 2-4: Rotation One
- Weeks 5-7: Rotation Two
- Weeks 7-10: Rotation Three
Experience Includes:
- Developing and executing programs like living history, STEM activities, Summer Institute for Teachers, academic webinars, performances, and more
- Processing archival materials for digitization
- Processing artifacts from the backlogs
- Research and writing
Application requirements:
- Minimum of 6 credit hours in History selected from the list above.
- Cover letter explaining your interests in History and how course work has prepared you for the internship.
- Portfolio of 2-3 History assignments showing the quality of your work: research papers, podcasts, digital projects, primary source analysis essays, etc.
- Letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
- Submit all materials to the Department of History, 308 Reed Hall, by March 15, 2024.
