Webinar: When the Men Were Gone: A Story of the Homefront
Join the National Museum of the Pacific War for our April webinar entitled, "When the Men Were Gone: A Story of the Homefront". During this 30-minute webinar registrants will hear from author Marjorie Herrera Lewis. In 1944, during World War II, Brownwood, Texas faced the potential loss of its beloved Friday night football tradition as most men were away fighting. Assistant Principal Tylene Wilson stepped up to coach the local high school football team, defying societal norms of the time. Drawing on her knowledge of the game learned from her father, she faced significant opposition but remained determined to lead the team. Wilson's efforts not only kept the football season alive but also provided hope and unity for a community grappling with the challenges of war. Her inspiring story became the basis for the novel "When the Men Were Gone," which celebrates her perseverance and courage.
Marjorie Herrera Lewis is an award-winning novelist and sportswriter, named the first female Dallas Cowboys beat writer when she was with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She later joined the SportsDay staff of The Dallas Morning News where she continued to cover the NFL. Marjorie co-hosts “Journey Through Sports and Life,” a weekly television show streaming on DBTV and also available on all podcast sites. Her debut novel, When the Men Were Gone, was named a Best Book by Sports Illustrated, a Best Book So Far by Newsweek, and winner of the Pencraft Award for Literary Excellence. The novel also was recognized by the New Mexico and Arizona Book Awards.
